C1765NFW - letter "w" always appears when selecting scan-to email address

Recently just updated to latest firmware on C1765NFW 

Now, whenever I select to "Scan" --> "Scan to email...",  the letter "w" appears but any other button presses will put the letter "w" on the display panel.  I cannot select any addresses from my address book.

So I tried something else, to update my date/time on the printer.  When I get to the screen to modify the time, I try to press up/down, or the digits on the number pad, and the number always becomes "9".   (I was able to overcome this challenge by setting the date/time in the web management interface).

The letter "w" and number "9" are on the shared key, but nothing is pressing the physical button (and nothing has been spilled on the keypad!).  Numerous power cycles have not fixed the problem, and this only started happening after updating firmware to 1.44.00.

I'm suspecting this is a firmware bug and may permeate to other menu choices I haven't tested.  Advice or suggestions are appreciated.
