1600n says [Jam 1] or [No Cartridge]

Okay, so here's my Icelandic saga:

I bought a replacement toner cartridge for my 1600n.  I put it in, start up the machine, it starts up and then finishes its whatever and then starts beeping like it's not happy.

So I look at the LED display and it says:

[Jam 1] or

[No cartridge]

It also says Toner 0%, even though I just put a brand-new, toner-filled cartridge in there.

I've already looked at the thread where the guy gives the long explanation about opening up the back and finding some S-piece that's popped loose, but I did all that and my S-piece is still in place and nicely swivelable.  So does anyone else have any ideas on how I can get my trusty machine back to working order so I don't have to violate my Shinto code of ethics and give up on this wonderful little creature?
